Swollen, red and bleeding gums are signs of an unhealthy mouth. In addition to bad breath, these conditions can affect your total body health, contributing to heart disease and other serious illnesses. Thanks to the many advanced treatments our periodontist offer, Tijuana dentist can help you reverse — and manage — your periodontal disease.

What causes periodontal disease?

Usually the cause is plaque and the toxins produced by plaque — which you can control with careful daily brushing and flossing and regular dental visits. Plaque hardens into calculus (tartar), which harbors damaging bacteria in the gums and around your teeth. Other tmes it is the result of injury, medication, or just bleeding gums.

When do You need a cleaning and when do You need more than a cleaning?

The typical "cleaning" patient has 2-3 mm pockets and has little plaque or bleeding. It would be ideal if all of our patients came into the office in this condition. Unfortunately, when it has been a few years since you've had your teeth cleaned, the tartar is on there a little tougher and often below the gumline, not allowing you to acces those areas with your toothbrush and therefore, the bacteria can do some damage to the tissues deep below the gums.

Peridontal Flap Surgery

Gingival flap surgery is a type of gum procedure. The gums are separated from the teeth and folded back temporarily. This allows to we to reach the root of the tooth and the bone. Gingival flap surgery is used to treat gum disease (periodontitis). It may be recommended for people with moderate or advanced periodontitis. Usually, a treatment that doesn't involve surgery is done first. This is called scaling and root planing. If this treatment does not eliminate the gum infection, gingival flap surgery may be used. It also may be done along with another procedure known as osseous (bone) surgery.

Bone Grafts

A bone graft is used to recreate bone and soft supporting tissues lost due to gum disease. It's also called regenerative surgery. The goal of regenerative surgery is to coax the body into rebuilding the bone and other structures that attach a tooth to the jaw. It is done by our mexican periodontist, a dentist who specializes in diagnosing and treating gum disease.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty

Gingivectomy is the removal of gum tissue (gingiva) by surgery. Gingivoplasty is a type of gum surgery used to reshape healthy gum tissue around teeth. Gingivectomy first was developed to treat periodontal disease. Today, it is more commonly used to improve the appearance of gums. Gum tissue may need to be removed for two reasons: Gaps (pockets) have formed between the teeth and gums. This can trap bits of food, harbor colonies of bacteria, and make it difficult to keep the area clean. If the pockets involve only soft tissue, they can be removed by a gingivectomy (trimming the gums). There is too much gum tissue around your teeth. Some people don't like how this looks and want to have it removed. It also can make teeth and gums hard to keep clean. In severe cases, this condition can interfere with chewing and speech. Excess growth of gum tissue can be caused by certain medicines. Sometimes there is no apparent cause.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical procedure utilized by dentists to promote the growth of new bone in areas of the jaw which have been damaged by gum disease. It is also known as guided bone regeneration, and it is classically used to stabilize teeth endangered or to prepare an area of the jaw for dental implants. The surgery is invasive, and it is important to seek out a dental surgeon who has experience with the procedure and a good track record with patients. We have in our team of specialists to Dr. Francisco Ceseña one of the best dental surgeons and Maxillofacial Surgeon Latin America and Dr. Bernando Bogarin known specialist in Periodontics.
